13 people have been confirmed dead by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) while nine were said to have been injured and two others currently in coma in a multiple auto-crash along Asaba-Onitsha Expressway.
Delta state Commander of the FRSC, Mr. Random Kulven, who confirmed this to our reporter on telephone, said the accident occurred around Okpanam Community Junction along the Expressway when the driver of a green coloured Toyota Car with registration number AA 231 XX heading towards Onitsha allegedly veered out of his way after losing control of his driving, and severally somersaulted into incoming vehicles, thereby killing thirteen persons with nine injured and two others rushed to the hospital still in coma.
Insisting that deviant drivers have been confirmed to flout orders of the road safety officials, Mr. Kulven warned motorists against flouting safety rules, disclosing that victims of the accident were trapped inside the car after it somersaulted severally to veer out of its way as no help come their way. It was gathered that sympathizers who later trooped to the scene after long battle to survive by the victims failed, forced the car doors opened with axes before the corps were moved out to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC Asaba) mortuary.
Eye witness, Kate Okafor said the driver of the car was on top speed which he allegedly slept-off and the car veered out of its way after severally somersaulting. But residents within Okpanam community who spoke to our reporter on condition of anonymity said it was the sixth times in the month of December, 2016 severally vehicles had crashed into others on the same spot and blame the frequent act on over speeding on the part of the drivers. Only last Monday, a trailer load of goods reportedly crashed into a stationary vehicle in Ubulu-Okiti community along the Expressway and damaged beyond recognition the vehicles after the driver claimed to have lost his break, fortunately no life was lost.
With the hue and cry of frequent accident on the Asaba-Onitsha Expressway, respondents who spoke to our reporter however called on the Road Safety Corps Officials to readable their efforts with a view to arresting and bringing to book road offenders. Investigation revealed that victims of the accident admitted into the Federal Medical Centre (FMC Asaba) for treatment, were responding well as one of the doctors who did not want his name in the print said they might be discharged soon.
