Counter insurgency: Boko Haram threatens to kill fleeing members

The threat by the Boko Haram leaders follows the on-going operation rescue finale by the Nigerian Army in the Sambiza forest which has put pressure on the insurgents.

A vigilante operative from Damboa Mallam Abubakar Buba confirmed to the New Telegraph the threats by Boko Haram leaders to kill any fleeing member of the group.

“From the intelligence reports we got from some Boko Haram insurgents arrested, their leadership has threatened them not to flee, as anybody found will be executed,” he said.

Similarly, the theater commander of operation lafiya dole, Major General Lucky Irabor, also confirmed the threat by the Boko Haram leaders.

He said leaders of the terrorist group had issue a threat that any member of Boko Haram terrorists found fleeing the Sambiza forest and other hide outs, as a result of our on-going operation rescue finale in the Sambiza forest and other areas of operations will face the risk of being executed.

However, General Irabor urged the terrorists that are ready to use the safe heaven corridor to surrender.

He said the military will treat them humanely, according to the international best practices.

The theater commander noted that all those that surrender would be deradicalised, trained and be re-integrated into the society, so that they would live their normal lives.

Meanwhile, the border between Nigeria and Cameroon has been completely reopened for the first time in three years.

Officials from the two countries met this week in Yaounde to review security issues as the terrorist group continues to be decimated by West African countries.

Cross-border military raids targeting the Islamist militant group have been greatly reduced.
